History 310 - The United States: History 300 Review

Getting Started

Things to think about when starting your H310 paper - brainstorming, topic development, etc.

Thesis 101 - it comes up from the research. Don't start with a thesis in mind.

Reference Sources

Here's a list of selected general American History reference books (available in the Garver Room) you may want to consider.

Remember, reference books CANNOT be checked out or leave the library. When you are done using them, please return reference books to the cart near the entrance to the Garver Room.

Secondary Sources

Reference books don't provide all the answers. Eventually you are going to need to move on to other sources to get more details. That's where the OWH Library catalog and databases can help!

  • Use the library catalog to find books in the stacks. Anything that you get from the stacks can be checked out for 3 weeks.
  • Use the E-Resources by Discipline to find materials in the databases like journal articles and primary sources.

Look at the bibliography of each source you have to find more sources on your topic!
