BIO 100 - Introduction to Biology General: Mr. Mundra's Class

This guide provides access to resources recommended for research in Biology.

Mr. Mundra's Winter Term Biology 100 Project

Project Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is to help you understand a disease or condition affecting either the human body, the function of the body systems it affects, and how it affects this body system responds to the disease. You will complete ONE of these papers during the duration of the winter term.

You may choose a disease affecting one of the diseases that we have covered in class, namely the reproductive system, digestive system, or the neuromuscular system.

Due Date:
Monday, February 20th

Guidelines:

A. Paper format: Your paper should “answer” the following questions in NO MORE than 6 pages (12 font, 1” margin, 1.5 spacing).

1.What organ system does your disease affect and how does it normally function under homeostatic condition?

2.What is the main effect that your disease has on this organ system? Begin with a description of what occurs at the molecular level and then trace this change to the cellular level, tissue level, organ level, and organism level (i.e. symptoms perceived by individual)

3.How do current treatments address the causes of the disease? If there are no treatments, describe 1-2 examples of research currently being undertaken.

B.  Checkpoints:

            January 25 – confirm project topic

            February 1 – references for your project

            February 8 – submit outline

            February 15 – submit draft of paper

            February 20 – final paper printed and due in class

C. Citations and academic integrity: As always, adhering to the Academy’s policy on academic integrity is of upmost importance. As this project involves independent research, you must be particularly careful to take the time to properly reference the resources you consult. Please remember:

1.You must include a bibliography that includes every reference source that you used over the duration of your research. This may include interviews with doctors, help you received from a peer editor, websites you used, etc. You may choose any citation style that you wish (e.g. MLA, APA, Chicago) as long as you are consistent.

2.In the body of your paper, you must cite any piece of information that you garnered from another source. You must do this even if you paraphrase! You will use in-text citations that follow the phrase containing the information with the author’s name, the year of the publication, and if referring to a very specific piece of information from a written source, the page number on which it occurred. Example: Biology is the best subject there is (Abel, 2014)

3.You must cite at least 5 non-website sources in the body of your paper. These could include interviews, academic journal articles, encyclopedia articles, reference texts, etc). You may certainly use websites in your paper, just so long as you cite them!

  • The library has a resource page set up for this project specifically. Use to find citation guides, lists of available books, links to key journal databases, and more.

2.  Your textbook- although you will have to start research on your disease prior to covering those topics in class, your textbook is a great resource for identifying diseases and understanding how they fit in to human physiology.

Final thoughts:

If you work diligently and consistently, ask me for help when you require it, and are open to suggestions, then you will do fine.  This project is worth a significant portion of your overall grade in the Winter term.  It is a chance for you to demonstrate a variety of different skills.  I hope that your motivation for pursuing your chosen topic will give you a chance learn more about a particular topic in great depth.  The more work that you put into this project early in the term, the more time you will have to make improvements and to master the material.  Thorough, in-depth research takes time! In addition, writing reports and planning presentations also take considerable amounts of time.  Please plan ahead.

Reliable vs Unreliable Source Materials

Don't forget to critically assess each source that you use, whether a website, a print book, a journal article, or an interview. 

A common way to think about each source is to run through a mnemonic device such as "A,B,C,D."
     Authority - does the author have the credentials to express the opinions given?
     Bias - is the material presented in a neutral way or lean liberal or conservative?
     Currency - is the material presenting the most recent and up-to-date information on the subject?
     Documentation - are the claims made in the text backed up with references and citations to other works?
