Faculty Guide to the Historical Map Collections: Map Classes @ the OWHL

Ready to add excellent maps to your syllabus? Request a session!

Session Overview

Map sessions can look a lot of different ways, so please reach out with questions and ideas.

In general,

  • classes will visit the library for a 75- minute map session with the Geographer-at-Large or Head of Archives & Special Collections
  • up to four maps from the physical map collection can be pulled for each map session, and the entire digitized collection is available for your use as well
  • sessions can follow the OWHL's map engagement activities, your own activities specific to your class, or a combination thereof

OWHL's Map Engagement Activities (Samples)

The overall goal of these activities is to  emphasize students' analytical and metacognitive skills—Observation, Insight, and Reflection. The sample worksheets below are some of the activities we'll use for a map session when faculty do not want to use their own class-specific activities. These worksheets are living documents, and we regularly update them or adjust them to meet the needs of a particular topic exploration or class learning objective. Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions or requests to tailor a worksheet and map session to your syllabus!
