Researchers categorize humor differently, but most separate them into either four or eight categories. Most papers that use four categories title them self-defeating, aggressive, self-enhancing, and affiliative, and those categories fall under the two umbrellas of dark and light humor. For the purpose of this guide, these are the terms used.
