Finding Primary Sources

Finding primary sources can be tricky.  One of the best strategies is to mine the bibliographies of secondary and tertiary sources to locate the citations for primary source materials you would like to use.  To find primary sources in the OWHL Catalog, type the term "primary source" after your search term in the catalog.  This will reveal results that are either primary sources themselves (such as autobiographies, letters, diaries, documents, legislation, etc.) or books that contain primary source material within.  Newspaper articles from the time period are also good primary sources. Don't forget that primary sources are not just textual.  They can be objects and works of art, photographs or illustrations.  Use databases to find these types of primary sources, and don't hesitate to ask a librarian for assistance - we are here to help and can save you precious time!

ALWAYS use the date range feature when searching for primary source newspaper articles.  An article is only a primary source if it was published at the time in which an event took place.
